The former national team goalkeeper Robin Olsen and his Malmö FF had a nightmare evening in the Czech Republic. Viktoria Plzen won the Europa League meeting with 3–0 when the Scanians suffered double injuries and a red card already during the first half.

Most things went against us, says Otto Rosengren to Disney+.

When goalkeeper Robin Olsen received the message that he would not be the first-choice goalkeeper in the upcoming World Championship qualifying matches against Switzerland and Kosovo, the 35-year-old made the decision to quit the national team.

At least as long as Jon Dahl Tomasson is the national team manager.

Severe injuries

In the club team Malmö FF, Olsen is still the first choice between the posts – even after Henrik Rydström was fired as head coach last week.

When Malmö faced Czech Viktoria Plzen away in the second round of the Europa League group stage, Olsen – with 79 international matches on his merit list – conceded a goal after 34 minutes.

By then, MFF had already had a nightmare start to the match. After just over a quarter of an hour, center back Pontus Jansson was forced to substitute after a blow to the head.

Twenty minutes later, the next unplanned substitution came when team captain Anders Christiansen injured himself after being subjected to a nasty tackle.

The tough evening continued. In the 34th minute, MFF's midfielder Lasse Berg Johnsen received his second yellow card and was thus sent off.

It felt like most things went against us. They are two extremely important players for us and two leaders. Then we have one in goal when it's 0-0 (Hugo Bolin) and then a red card. It becomes an uphill battle, says midfielder Otto Rosengren.

In the 44th minute, the extension came. Olsen saved a first shot, but the rebound went straight out to Rafiu Durosinmi and the Nigerian could easily make it 2-0.

Has zero points

Eight minutes into the second half, the curtain fell for Malmö. Olsen made a brilliant save on Vydra's header, but the rebound could be sent in by Karel Spácil to make it 3-0.

It's not good enough. We concede too cheap goals. A bit too easy, unfortunately, and then it's hard to turn the match around, says Rosengren.

Shortly after, the home team's Merchas Doski received a direct red card after a really nasty stamp on Adrian Skogmar.

However, it did not become a ticket back into the match for MFF. In stoppage time, striker Daniel Gudjohnsen also received a red card after raising his elbow to an opponent's face.

The temporary MFF coach Anes Mravac started with a 3-2 win over Värnamo on Sunday, but after Thursday's tough defeat in the Czech Republic, the Scanians are on zero points in the Europa League.
