The 27-year-old man, who was arrested in November last year, is suspected of serious unlawful intelligence activities.
–It is a rare case. It is the first time we are testing these provisions, says prosecutor Carl Fari to NRK.
The man risks up to 21 years in prison. He is alleged to have delivered information at meetings in Serbia, Turkey, and Norway that "can harm fundamental national interests", according to the indictment. This includes information about employees, security routines, and floor plans of the embassy.
Norway's security service believes that the man has exposed both individuals and American security interests to an increased risk.
In total, Russian and Iranian authorities are alleged to have paid the man the equivalent of just over 200,000 Swedish kronor, of which the Iranian share was paid out in bitcoin.
The man's lawyer states to Norwegian TV2 that the man acknowledges the factual circumstances, but denies criminal liability.
