The Norwegian church officially apologizes to hbtqi-persons for the pain and harm they created within the group over many decades.

Already in 2022, the archbishop acknowledged that the Norwegian church as an institution exposed hbtqi persons. Homosexuals have, among other things, been stopped from working in the church and for a long time the church claimed that aids was God's punishment for homosexuality.

Then it is right that we take responsibility as a church and apologize. Some may think that it is too late while others think that it is too early. According to us, it is right not to wait any longer, says Archbishop Olav Fykse Tveit.

The apology was made at a gay bar in central Oslo. The same place that was exposed to a terrorist attack during the Norwegian capital's pride week in 2022 when two men were killed and nine people were injured.

This is a symbolically important place. It has been a safe place for hbtqi persons for almost 50 years, says Olav Fykse Tveit in his speech.
