The Norwegian government proposes that all municipalities should be allowed to introduce a tourist tax. This means that an overnight stay can become up to five percent more expensive, according to the government proposal, which is now being sent out for consultation, reports the Norwegian news site E24.

The tax, or the visitor's fee, is to be levied on overnight stays and is intended to finance expenses that arise in places with many tourists.

The industry, NHO Reiseliv, is against the proposal.pIt will only make it more expensive for the Norwegians themselves.

Two out of three overnight stays are accounted for by the Norwegians.

The same debate emerged recently in Sweden, several municipalities wanted to introduce local tourist taxes, but it did not get any hearing from the government.
