Drones with North Korean cluster ammunition have been used in attacks in southern Ukraine, according to the report from EU-funded Conflict Armament Research.
Independent experts are said to have examined the previously unknown type of ammunition, found in a Russian so-called FPV drone near Ukrainian Cherson in September.
During the war, North Korea has supplied Russia with soldiers, artillery and rockets, but the use of North Korean cluster ammunition has not been previously known. The discovery establishes "another direct material link between North Korea's defense industry and the war in Ukraine", the report authors write according to The New York Times.
Cluster bombs, or cluster ammunition, contain a number of smaller bombs that when they explode release multiple explosive charges that spread over a large area.
Over 100 states prohibit the use, transfer, production and storage of cluster bombs. However, neither Russia nor Ukraine are parties to the convention.
