In a joint statement with neighboring countries, Smer (The State Medical Ethics Council) writes that the increasing demand for cross-border sperm and egg donations in Europe raises several ethical and legal questions. The demand has in turn led to an increased dependence on commercial egg and sperm banks, among others in Denmark.
Most countries have national laws that limit the number of children a single donor can give rise to, but international regulation is lacking. This means that a donor can in theory give rise to hundreds of children.
In their joint statement, the four Nordic ethics councils call for an international limitation.
