The girl fled through the forest and returned home late on Monday, the same day she was kidnapped in Kebbi, according to information from Principal Musa Rabi Magaji.
Another student, who fled in connection with the attack and was not among the 25 who were taken away, is also safe, the principal says.
The attackers were carrying “sophisticated weapons and fired sporadically” when they stormed the school early Monday, police said. The attack killed the school’s vice principal and wounded a security guard.
A major search operation is underway. Army chief and Major General Waidi Shaibu has ordered soldiers to "fight day and night" to rescue the girls.
Kidnappings of schoolchildren for ransom are a regular occurrence in northern Nigeria, where several armed criminal groups operate. Northwestern Nigeria has long been plagued by gangs who also loot villages, steal livestock and burn down houses.
