Tunnels between Helsingör and Helsingborg, metro between Copenhagen and Malmö or trains from Copenhagen to Landskrona?
The visions are many – and a new Öresund connection is needed in the long run.
But not now, concludes the Swedish Transport Administration.
There is social benefit in developing new infrastructure across the sound. But we do not see any need for capacity reasons until very far into the future, says Lars Brümmer, strategist and project manager at the Swedish Transport Administration at a digital press conference.
Traffic is rolling – but for how long? In the investigation Capacity and redundancy for transports across Öresund, which is now complete, the Swedish Transport Administration states that the railway capacity across the bridge will suffice for about 25 years. The most important measure for traffic is instead to invest in land.
As for the railway, the message is clear: Two tracks between Hässleholm and Lund are needed. More capacity should also be built north of Hässleholm, according to the Swedish Transport Administration. Only then can one invest in expanding the railway capacity across the sound.
According to the investigation, the biggest obstacle for the railway system across Öresund in the short term is border controls. As for the three proposed Öresund connections – Helsingborg–Helsingör, the European track via Landskrona, and the Öresund metro – the Swedish Transport Administration takes no stance.
