Ireland's two traditional major parties, the right-liberal Fianna Fáil and the conservative Fine Gael, will continue in government – but now with a group of independent members as the third party instead of the Green Party, reports news agency AFP.
The agreement, which is expected to be formally finalized on January 22, means a continuation of the rotation of the position of Taoiseach – Prime Minister – that the parties have used in recent years. Fianna Fáil's Michéal Martin will become Taoiseach first, after having been Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence since 2022, but will have to step down in 2027 in favour of the current Prime Minister Simon Harris from Fine Gael.
