The Netherlands are clear for the semifinal after turning around and winning against Turkey.
The match ended 2–1.
It was a real struggle today, says goal scorer Stefan de Vrij after the match.
Turkey had a long 1–0 lead, after they struck in the 35th minute when Samet Akaydin headed in Arda Gülers' pass.
But in the second half, the Netherlands could turn the match around. The 1–1 goal came in the 70th minute when an unmarked de Vrij could head in Memphis Depay's pass.
The 2–1 goal came just over five minutes later. The goal initially seemed to belong to Cody Gakpo, but was later judged to be an own goal by Mert Müldür.
"Showed real heart"
In the final minutes, Turkey pushed hard for an equalizer, and were close to a goal on several occasions with dangerous chances. The Netherlands could still withstand the Turkish pressure.
The players really showed heart. We were forced to suffer, but it ultimately resulted in a great success, says the Dutch national team coach Ronald Koeman.
Turkey is thus out of the European Championship.
The elimination from the European Championship was not the only sad thing for Turkey in the match. In the final stage of the match, Samet Akaydin was seriously injured after a duel with Micky van de Ven.
The 1–0 goal scorer was in tears and twisted in pain when he received help from the team doctors, and then had to be carried off on a stretcher.
Controversial "wolf gesture"
Captain Hakan Calhanoglu was self-critical after the loss.
We didn't start the second half very well and fell behind. After their second goal, we started kicking long balls. That happens. It's honorable to have come this far.
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was present in the stands, and during the national anthem, thousands of Turkish supporters made the controversial "wolf gesture" - the gesture that led to defender Merih Demirals' suspension.
In the semifinal, the Netherlands will face England, who earlier on Saturday won their quarterfinal against Switzerland.
