The Netherlands' government recommends that parents should prohibit children under 15 from using certain social media, for example Tiktok and Snapchat.

The recommendation is based on the negative consequences social media can have for children and young people's mental health, according to the country's department for health, well-being and sport.

"It's about sleep problems, panic attacks, depressive symptoms, worse concentration and a negative self-image", says a spokesperson for the department in a statement.

Several countries have previously issued recommendations regarding children's use of social media. In November 2024, Australia introduced a world-unique law that means social media companies can be forced to pay millions in fines if they do not manage to shut out people under 16 years from the platforms. In May, New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon also announced that he wants to see an age limit of 16 years for social media.

France's President Emmanuel Macron has also previously said that he wants an age limit on social media.
