Among the nominees are, for example, British doctor Rachel Clarke with "The story of a heart" and British biologist Helen Scales with "What the wild sea can be".
The prize is a sister prize to Women’s prize for fiction, and is open to female English-speaking authors from any country in the non-fiction genre. It was established last year in response to statistics showing that men in the UK buy more non-fiction than women, and write more award-winning non-fiction books.
Neneh Cherry is based in London and her book was published in Swedish last autumn.
The prize is approximately 390,000 kronor. Last year, it went to Naomi Klein for "Doppelgänger". This year's winner will be revealed on June 12.
