Reigning champions France have suffered a major blow ahead of the European Handball Championship. A calf injury will keep Nedim Remili out of the tournament.

Remili, 30, was named the European Championship's "MVP" (most valuable player) two years ago when France won gold in Cologne.

Now the nine-meter player will not be able to defend the gold.

With just days until the European Championship starts, the French national handball team announced that Remili has a calf injury. Remili, who plays professionally for Veszprém in Hungary, suffered a problem with his left calf while rehabilitating a thigh injury in the same leg.

"Unfortunately, the examination showed an acute injury that means he is ruled out of the European Championship," said Emmanuel Bidet, France's team doctor.

France will open its campaign against the Czech Republic in Oslo on Thursday, the first day of the tournament. They are in the same group as Norway and Ukraine.

Sweden plays its European Championship opener against the Netherlands on Saturday in Malmö.
