Thus, Sweden's museums have almost recovered to the visitor levels before the pandemic, according to statistics from the Agency for Cultural Analysis.
But the increase is not comprehensive. Large so-called central museums saw an increase in the number of visitors by 9 percent. Municipal and other state museums also increased by 7 and 4 percent, respectively, while regional museums, on the other hand, saw a decrease of 5 percent.
On January 1, 2023, entrance fees were reintroduced at the state museums. It does not seem to have had such a major impact on visitors, according to the Agency for Cultural Analysis. Although more museums now charge an entrance fee, visits have continued to increase, according to the report.
Sweden's most visited museum is Skansen in Stockholm with 1.4 million visitors in 2024, followed by the National Museum and Malmö Museum with 611,000 and 593,000 visitors, respectively.
