Already before the recent unrest, over 100 people had been killed in election-related violence.
The violence escalated over the Christmas weekend as the country's highest court declared the ruling party Frelimo's candidate Daniel Chapo as the winner of the presidential election in October with 65 percent of the votes. Frelimo has held power in the southern African country for nearly 50 years.
Among those killed in the latest escalation are two police officers, announced Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda at a press conference late on Tuesday.
Hundreds of violent crimes have been reported and 25 people, including 13 police officers, have been injured.
The main opposition candidate Venâncio Mondlane received, according to the court, barely 25 percent of the votes, but has hinted on social media that he sees himself as the rightful winner.
The election has been rejected by Western observers.
