Tagawa first played the main antagonist Shang Tsung in the 1995 film "Mortal Kombat" and then reprised the role in several television series and also voiced his character in a version of the game.
But Tagawa is not only associated with “Mortal Kombat.” He had a long career with several roles, including in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Oscar-winning epic “The Last Emperor,” the Bond film “Time for Vengeance” and in “Showdown in Little Tokyo” opposite Dolph Lundgren. In total, he played over 150 roles.
Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was born in Japan and trained in martial arts in his youth. His father was a soldier in the US military, so the family moved to the US where he began his acting career.
