A total of 1.75 million Canadians returned by car or plane from the U.S. in December last year. The decline in car travel was 30.7 percent, while the decline in air travel was 18.7 percent.
Visits to Canada by U.S. residents also decreased significantly in December last year, down 9 percent for car and air travelers.
The plunge in travel between the countries follows a year marked by the Trump administration's tariffs on countries including Canada, which were motivated by President Donald Trump's accusations that Canada was not doing enough to crack down on drug smuggling and refugee flows at the border.
There is also a latent threat of 250 percent shock tariffs on Canadian lumber and dairy products.
