During an indoor competition in Belgrade, the Swedish long jumper had long been stuck, and didn't get it at all. After four jumps, Montler had only been credited with one valid jump, and had a good way to go to reach the top.
Then it happened. Really.
In the fifth jump, the Swede struck with a giant jump of 8.23. A jump that was a new world's best performance of the year, and which left a strong starting field in the dust.
Beat the OS gold medalist: "About time"
Among others, the OS gold medalist from Paris, Miltiadis Tentoglou, was competing. But not even he could match Montler's giant jump.
It was incredibly nice to beat Tentoglou and it has been a long time coming. We are such good friends and he came up and congratulated me afterwards and said: "It's been three years since you last beat me", so it was about time I got a win, says Montler to SVT.
The Swede won the competition with a decimeter margin down to second-placed Isaac Grimes.
That jump felt absolutely fantastic. I actually felt in my body the whole time that there were good lengths, and my body responded. I felt fresh, so it was nice to put it in the fifth round.
Larsson strong in season opener
The previous world's best performance of the year had been held by the Portuguese Gerson Baldé with a jump of 8.11.
In the same competition, sprinter Henrik Larsson also made his season debut in a fine way.
The 25-year-old finished third in the 60-meter final with a time of 6.57, just four hundredths of a second behind both winner Ronnie Baker and the Swedish record on the distance.
