"This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of this season. I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of this club during my time here," the 33-year-old said in a statement on social media.

Salah joined Liverpool from Roma in the summer of 2017 and has since cemented his place as one of the club's greatest-ever players. With 255 goals in 435 appearances to date, he is third in Liverpool's all-time scoring list.

"Words are not enough. The support you gave me during the best parts of my career and the way you stood by me during my toughest times is something I will never forget and something I will carry with me forever," he said.

Salah has been at odds with the team's head coach Arne Slot during the season. After being benched for the third consecutive game in December, the star criticized the club.

"It feels like the club has thrown me under the bus," he said.

Slot's response was to drop Salah from the squad altogether in the following Champions League match.

"I don't really know what he means or who it's against. He has the right to react, but not in front of the media, at least not without us as a club reacting," said Slot.

During his nine years in the Liverpool shirt, Salah has won the Premier League twice, as well as the Champions League, the Club World Cup and the FA Cup.
