A man in Australia has been fined 343,500 dollars, equivalent to over 2.1 million kronor, for sharing "deepfake" porn videos with famous women, authorities announce.

Anthony Rotondo admitted to the crime. The victims' names have been protected by a court decision. "Deepfake" technology is used to generate fake images and videos, often with real people in fictional situations. So-called "nudify" apps – AI tools that digitally undress people in images and videos – have exploded on the internet.

Media company ABC quotes one of the victims as telling the court that they felt "offended, vulnerable and completely powerless".

Rotondo had spread the material on a website that has since been closed, according to the country's internet authority.

"This measure sends a strong signal about the consequences for everyone who commits image-based deepfake crimes", comments the web authority E-safety, which also urges all affected to report it.
