The 2019 US Open winner underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor in 2023 and has since struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and a fear of dying. He often becomes hypervigilant about potential dangers and threats. Ahead of the Masters, where large crowds in several places can get close to the players, he has become aware of where security personnel are positioned at each hole.

"There is probably no safer golf tournament in the world. I'm happy about that, but there's still a war going on in my head about whether I'm safe or not," says Gary Woodland.

Woodland first opened up about his PTSD at The Players in March. His victory at the Houston Open shortly afterward was emotional.

I didn't know that talking about my war would make me stronger, but it has. I feel much stronger now than I did three weeks ago.
