Up to 60 people have been killed by Israeli attacks in southern and central Gaza in the past 24 hours. One of the attacks was carried out against al-Mawasi, an area where Israel's military has urged displaced Palestinians to seek shelter.
At least 17 Palestinians have been killed in an air strike near a gas station in al-Mawasi, outside the city of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, according to authorities in the Hamas-controlled strip.
According to news agency AP's sources at Nasser Hospital, the area attacked was filled with tents where Palestinians displaced from other parts of Gaza lived. The area of al-Mawasi has been designated by Israel as a safe zone.
It was in al-Mawasi that at least 90 people were killed in an Israeli attack on Saturday.
Several people were also killed in an attack on a school building in Nuseirat in central Gaza. There too, displaced Palestinians are said to have sought shelter.
Israel's military claims that intelligence has shown that the school housed terrorists and that reports of several civilians being killed in the attack are being investigated.
Terror-listed Hamas has accused Israel of stepping up attacks in Gaza in an attempt to thwart the efforts of Arab mediators and the US to reach a ceasefire agreement. Several large-scale attacks have been carried out in recent days, resulting in many deaths.
Israel, on the other hand, claims that it is trying to eliminate Hamas fighters. According to a statement from the military, half of Hamas' military leadership has been killed, as well as 14,000 who fight for the terror-listed group. The military's figures have not been verified by independent parties.
