A 26-year-old man has been arrested on probable cause for the murder of a young woman in Salem this weekend. The man admits to aggravated assault but denies murder. There is currently no evidence that the suspect and the victim knew each other or had any previous contact, prosecutor Markus Hankkio said.

The court has decided to detain the person and that a forensic psychiatric examination be obtained.

The detention hearing was held on Tuesday afternoon and was short, about 20 minutes.

The 26-year-old, of slim build and with medium-length hair, dressed in a white T-shirt and slippers, participated via video link from the detention center together with his defense attorney.

"My client denies murder and admits to gross violation of the peace. A preliminary investigation is underway and my client is in custody with restrictions; I cannot comment further than that," the 26-year-old's lawyer, Karl Harling, told TT.

Good evidence

Prosecutor Markus Hankkio believes that the evidence is good.

"I think it's good, but the investigation is at its beginning, so there are a number of measures to take moving forward," he told TT.

At this time, Hankkio states that there is no connection between the suspected perpetrator and the victim.

"They seem completely unfamiliar to each other."

A grave breach of the peace refers to suspicions that a dead person has been handled in a particularly ruthless manner, such as dismemberment.

If that's what's at stake in this case, the prosecutor doesn't want to go into it.

"But the person has admitted to gross violation of the peace of a grave, and that includes handling a deceased body in a criminal manner, but I don't want to go into more detail about that," Markus Hankkio said.

Previous verdict

Do you have any idea about the motive?

"No, it will be investigated further, with an examination of the suspect's phones, computers, etc. The previous conviction that the person in question has is, of course, of interest, and it will be compared to see if there are similarities with the case now being investigated."

There are currently no additional suspects in the case.

"But of course, we will investigate and see whether there may be others involved or not. We are not limiting ourselves to the investigation of this person."

The 26-year-old was arrested in a forest area and detained on Saturday; he was remanded in custody on Tuesday morning.

The 25-year-old victim disappeared on Boxing Day night and was found dead after a search operation on the evening of December 27.

In addition to the person who is now being held in custody, another person was arrested and detained on reasonable suspicion of kidnapping, a lower level of suspicion. That person was released and removed from the investigation on Monday.

Markus Hankkio does not want to comment on why the person became a suspect in the first place.

"To be a reasonable suspect in this type of serious crime, very little can be enough. In this case, it has been established that this person had nothing to do with the crime," he said.
