It has now been just over three years since the new law requiring all cats to be tagged and registered came into force. There are now a total of around 616,000 cats in the Swedish Board of Agriculture's register. The agency writes in a press release that the number of registered cats is steadily ticking upwards, but that "considering how many cats there are in total," many are still missing from the register.
Luna is the most common name, but Doris is not far behind. Sigge held first place in 2024 but has been relegated to third place.
The most common type is the so-called farm cat or mixed-breed, which dominates the statistics with just over 475,000 cats. The most common purebred cat is the Ragdoll, with just over 31,000 cats, followed by the Maine Coon and Siberian cat with just under 16,500 and just under 12,500 cats respectively.
The largest number of registered cats is found in Västra Götaland with just over 102,000 cats. Stockholm comes in second place with just over 91,000, and Skåne in third place with just under 82,000 cats.
