Over three months - that is how long thousands of elderly people have had to wait to receive their social services. Now Ivo warns that elderly people are at risk of harm, both physically and mentally.

When a decision is made that a person is granted social services assistance, it must be implemented without delay. This includes, for example, moving to special housing or receiving help at home.

But in 2025, over 7,000 elderly people had to wait more than three months for decisions to be enforced, according to the Swedish Inspectorate for Health and Social Care (Ivo).

"This points to a structural problem. Municipalities need to get better at planning their elderly care to meet the needs of a rapidly growing elderly population," says Pernilla Pehrson Niia, head of department at Ivo, in a press release.
