The fraudsters called elderly people around Sweden and tricked them into transferring money. Now two people, who were identified as the ringleaders in the fraud, have been sentenced to long prison sentences by the Court of Appeal.

The operations were conducted from various call centers abroad, where the callers' goal was to scam elderly people out of money.

Two men who were identified as leaders of the fraud are now having their prison sentences confirmed by the Court of Appeal for Western Sweden.

"The Court of Appeal agrees with the District Court that the fraud crimes are serious because they were part of an extensive and systematic crime committed in an organized manner against older people," says Court of Appeal Councilor Lina Nestor in a press release.

The men – who are also convicted, among other things, of particularly serious assault – are sentenced to nine years and eight months and eight years and eight months in prison, respectively.

The district court sentenced a total of 14 people to prison. In addition to the two designated leaders, the Court of Appeal's ruling applies to six more of those previously convicted and essentially confirms the district court's ruling.
