This year's Migrant Prize goes to author Linus de Faire for bringing to life the thousands of Swedes who emigrated to Brazil in the early 20th century in his novel "Sveasagorna."

"It is a bustling epic novel, entirely in the spirit of Vilhelm Moberg, and a grand adventure," the jury wrote in its justification.

The Migrant Prize, worth 50,000 kronor, will be awarded by the Småland Literature Festival on January 31.

In a press release, Linus de Faire said he thinks the story has a message that also has relevance in today's world.

"When immigrants come to Sweden, it is seen as bad to be both Swedish and Iraqi. But many Swedes also maintain their traditions abroad and that is a strength."

Previous award winners include Balsam Karam and Pooneh Rohi.
