The attack took place in the suburb of the same name, about 10 miles outside the capital, Damascus. A statement from the country's Supreme Council of Shia Muslims said it was a targeted attack.
According to the council, Imam Farhan Hassan al-Mansour was killed when “his car was hit by an explosive device.”
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
There are around 300,000 Shia Muslims in civil war-torn Syria, where a large part of the population is Sunni Muslim.
Religious minorities are concerned about developments in the country since Islamists, led by current interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa, overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime and seized power.
