At least 25,000 protesters gathered in Giessen in connection with the AFD meeting, according to the police, and up to 5,000 police officers had been called in from across the country to quell any rioting and break roadblocks.
The large demonstrations forced the organizers to postpone the meeting for the formation of the youth union for two hours, among other things, around 1,000 participants were unable to get through due to the roadblocks where protesters formed human walls.
The new youth association – Generation Deutschland (Generation Germany) – will replace the former Junge Alternative (JA), which was dissolved after being classified as an extremist organization by security services. Jean-Pascal Hohm, a 28-year-old AfD politician at the local level in eastern Germany, was elected as its leader.
In his first speech, Hohm promised to “fight for a real change in migration policy so that Germany remains the homeland of Germans.”
