On Monday, C leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist announced that there was no support for a centre-right government with Magdalena Andersson as prime minister. This put the ball back in the Speaker’s court. The Speaker is currently holding talks with all parties about the next step.
“It has to end with votes so we can move on. Otherwise, we can go on as long as we want,” Kristersson says.
If no prime minister has been approved after four votes in parliament, a snap election must be held. This is the Speaker’s sharpest weapon.
Kristersson is due to speak with the Speaker by phone on Tuesday afternoon, during a break in the Nordic Council meeting in Helsinki. His message will be the same as before: if the Speaker believes there is parliamentary support for a “non-socialist” government, Kristersson is ready to explore the possibility.
“But the Speaker has to be the conductor now, the one who points out what should happen.”
