Time and again, society fails to stop violence in close relationships and violence against children - despite many victims having had contact with healthcare, social services or the police. It is quite obvious that not enough is being done, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M).

A survey conducted by the National Board of Health and Welfare of 98 crime victims, of which 41 were children and 57 were adults, shows major shortcomings in how those at risk are protected.

It is obvious that you cannot reach everyone, says Kristersson.

The Prime Minister believes that different authorities need to collaborate much more closely with each other, and on Wednesday announced that the government is establishing a special council to combat men's violence against women, which he himself will chair.

“Our damned duty”

"This report shows that it is possible to prevent more of the violence that occurs, and then it is our damned duty to try to do so," says Minister of Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed (KD).

Forssmed also mentioned the Council for Women's Safety as a way to increase pressure on the authorities and reduce violence against women.

"And we know that it is closely linked to violence against children. It is an extremely urgent task that we take very seriously," he says, adding:

It seems that this needs to be incorporated more systematically into the work of the authorities: asking questions and following up.

Save the Children: A huge betrayal

Erik Ulnes, an expert at Save the Children, emphasizes that this is the eighth time the National Board of Health and Welfare has released a similar report - and that many of the shortcomings recur year after year.

"When a child dies or is subjected to serious violence, it rarely comes out of the blue. It's a concern that has been known about in various ways, but still, there has been a failure to provide protection for these children. It's a huge letdown," he says.
