The USA must be involved as a guarantor if Sweden is to be able to send soldiers to Ukraine, says Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) after the fateful meeting in London. It is not a decision we take lightly, says the Prime Minister.

Much was about security guarantees for Ukraine when 15 countries gathered together with the EU and NATO in London on Sunday.

And Sweden is ready to contribute – even if it is still unclear how. And it will depend on the US being on board in some way.

The conditions must be very clear. It must be based on there being an American backup. It must be based on there being structures that are credible for this, says Kristersson to TT, SR Ekot, SVT and TV4 after the meeting.

Serious meeting

What Swedish security guarantees can concretely entail remains to be seen.

We will continue to be part of these talks, naturally. We are an appreciated partner, but we will not do anything that endangers Swedes in an unreasonable way.

Kristersson describes the meeting as marked by seriousness, uncertainty, and determination.

Everyone confirms their strong support for Ukraine and is willing to do more for Ukraine.

Can get the US on board?

Kristersson does not provide a recipe for how the US and Ukraine can start talking again after the drama on Friday, when the US President Donald Trump seriously sabotaged Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyj at the White House.

But he believes that it is still possible to show the US that European security also lies in the US's interest.

We have great respect for the fact that the US is increasingly engaged in what is happening in China and the Pacific, but what happens in Europe – with Russia's future threats to European democracies – that lies in the interest of the entire democratic world, says Kristersson in London.
