It is a "critical moment" for Canada, said Charles. From the throne, with Camilla by his side, the king spoke both English and French in the speech that came to focus on Canada as a sovereign state – even though he formally is the head of state.
We must realize that our world has not been so dangerous and unstable since World War II. Canada faces challenges without precedent.
Charles III's visit is highly symbolic – in light of Donald Trump's recurring threats to annex Canada. Moreover, he is the first British monarch to formally hold a so-called throne speech in a long time – the last was Queen Elizabeth II, who spoke in parliament in 1977.
Controlled by the government
Officially, King Charles has not commented on Trump's opinion that Canada should become the 51st state of the USA, but without mentioning the outbursts in direct terms, the marking was clear. The speech was also largely written and controlled by both the British and Canadian governments.
The speech was simultaneously an attempt not to directly confront the White House in Washington.
Many Canadians feel anxiety over the extensive changes taking place around them, said the king.
But I have always had the greatest admiration for Canada's unique identity – known worldwide for courage, and for having sacrificed itself in defense of national values and diversity.
Has great admiration
The speech to parliament, with Prime Minister Mark Carney in the front row, lasted just over half an hour.
Carney is said to have been dissatisfied with Buckingham Palace's invitation to the US president for a state visit, but King Charles' presence in Canada for a few days clearly marked an understanding between Ottawa and London.
