He was awarded the prize for his "warm, supporting and very beautiful-sounding voice. With his musicality, intelligence and natural aptitude for the esprit of the Baroque, we look forward to following the talented singer's continued development," the jury wrote in its justification.
The Drottningholm Theatre Friends Scholarship will be used to advance the careers of young singers who have just completed an opera academy education and are particularly interested in Drottningholm Theatre's 17th- and 18th-century repertoire. Previous recipients include mezzo-soprano Mathilda Sidén Silfver, baritone David Risberg and soprano Amie Foon.
Karl Söderström, 31, is from Uppsala and has been accepted into the Royal Swedish Opera's two-year opera studio.
