Johan Pehrson Held Betsson Shares Amid Gaming Decision Controversy

Minister of Education Johan Pehrson (L) had shares in the gaming company Betsson in 2024 without reporting it to the Government Offices. The same year, he participated in a decision regarding gaming companies, reports Swedish Radio Ekot.

This makes it possible that a conflict of interest may have occurred and no one has been able to control it, says Joakim Nergelius, professor of law at Örebro University, to the radio.

It is a criminal offense for a minister not to report shareholdings and Ekot has found eight cases where Pehrson failed in reporting between 2022 and 2024.

Pehrson, who in June will leave the post as leader of The Liberals, responds in writing to Ekot that the gaming decision he participated in was a legislative matter handled by another department.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, he wrote that it was a mistake and that he reported the shareholding both in 2023 and 2025, and that he has not bought any shares since becoming a minister.

Pehrson has been reported to the Constitutional Committee by the Left Party after the revelation.

The shares in Betsson were worth 13,000 kronor at the beginning of the year, according to Ekot.
