Rollins, considered by many to be an icon of jazz music, released over 60 albums during his career, which began in the 1940s. Despite several long hiatuses from music, he continued to tour into his 80s before pulmonary fibrosis finally forced his retirement in 2014.
The diagnosis and being forced to stop playing threw Rollins into depression.
"I had dedicated my life to fulfilling my potential in music, and not being able to play anymore meant I no longer had the chance to do so," he said in 2017, according to The Guardian.
Before that, he had received an honorary Grammy (2004) and the Polar Prize (2007) for his music.
No cause of death has been announced. Sonny Rollins was 95 years old.
