The team also criticizes the Asian Football Confederation for its lack of response to the issue.
In a joint statement via the players' union FIFPRO, Japan and Australia point to major economic differences compared to the men's tournament in Asia.
The women's prize pool is reported to have been $1.8 million (around SEK 17 million), compared to $14.8 million (around SEK 140 million) for the men's tournament.
The tournament attracted a total of 350,000 spectators and is said to have generated over $80 million (SEK 760 million) in revenue. The final in Sydney was played in front of 74,000 spectators - a record for the tournament.
The players believe that equal prize money would raise the level of women's football in the region.
