World number one Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals in Wimbledon after a dramatic meeting against the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
Dimitrov, ranked 21st in the world, made a giant match and pushed Sinner to a deficit of 0–2 in sets. Then Dimitrov served his shoulder apart and collapsed in pain on the grass.
The injury hurt too much and the Bulgarian had to throw in the towel and left the court in tears.
This was the fifth Grand Slam tournament in a row where the 34-year-old was forced to interrupt due to injuries.
It was not only Dimitrov who had injury problems during the match. Sinner fell badly already in the first set and injured his elbow, which led to a medical timeout in the second set. During that break, the elbow was treated by a physiotherapist and the Italian received pain relief.
With the interrupted match, Sinner is clear for the quarterfinals and continues the hunt for the title in Wimbledon.
