UN Envoy Urges Israel to Halt Strikes in Southern Syria

At least 13 people have been killed and several have been injured in Israeli bombings in southern Syria over the past 24 hours, according to local authorities. The UN envoy in Syria condemns Israel's "military escalation" and says it risks "destabilizing Syria at a sensitive time".

"Such actions undermine the efforts to build a new Syria that is at peace with itself and the region", says envoy Geir Pedersen in a statement.

The provincial government in Daraa in southern Syria reports that nine civilians were injured in Israeli artillery fire near the city of Nawa, writes AFP. The shelling occurred in connection with the Israeli "occupation forces advancing to this depth for the first time", according to a statement from the local authorities.

Air strikes on Wednesday

The Israeli military (IDF) reports that several people who fired at Israeli soldiers in the Tasil area were killed on Wednesday evening, according to Israeli media.

"The presence of weapons in southern Syria poses a threat to the state of Israel. IDF will not allow a military threat to exist in Syria and will act against it", says the Israeli military in a statement according to Haaretz.

On Wednesday, Israel carried out, among other things, air strikes against a military research facility in Damascus and an airbase near the city of Hamah. Four people were killed, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

Call to Israel

The UN envoy is now urging Israel to stop the attacks "which may constitute serious violations of international law and respect Syria's sovereignty".

Since the Islamist HTS movement overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime in December, Israel has carried out several hundred attacks against targets on Syrian soil. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in February that southern Syria must be completely demilitarized.
