How could Hamas carry out the extensive attack that became the starting shot for the Gaza war? Two years after the events, many significant question marks still remain regarding possible mistakes from the Israeli state, including that they missed warning signals and did not listen to military personnel on the ground who tried to alert their superiors.
From Netanyahu's and his government's side, they have consistently given the cold shoulder to all demands to appoint a state commission with the task of conducting a thorough examination that can bring clarity to the course of events.
Initially, the government referred to the fact that such an investigation could not be conducted while the war was ongoing. Currently, Netanyahu and other ministers instead refer to claims that the investigation would be "biased" towards the government.
On Wednesday evening, however, the Supreme Court announced that there are no real obstacles to appointing an investigation and demands that the government provide information within 30 days on what such a commission may look like, reports Times of Israel.
"The worst mistake in the nation's history requires a thorough and independent investigation", says the civil society organization Movement for quality government in Israel, in a statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision.
