Isabelle Gulldén Retires from Handball After Illustrious Career

After almost a lifetime in the service of handball, superstar Isabelle Gulldén is now hanging up her shoes, she announces on Instagram.

"The first time I stepped onto the handball court was like finding home. Now, 28 years later, it's time to say goodbye to what has been my life, my passion, my security", writes the 35-year-old.

Gulldén – considered by many to be Sweden's best player of all time – writes further that she "has loved every step, every sweaty training session, every match – even the toughest moments".

Isabelle Gulldén emerged in Sävehof, where she made her A-team debut in 2006 and later became Swedish champion four times. Between 2011 and 2022, she was a professional abroad in Danish Viborg, Romanian CSM Bucharest, French Brest Bretagne, and Vipers Kristiansand. During her time as a pro, she won, among other things, the Champions League twice – in 2016 with CSM Bucharest and in 2022 with Vipers Kristiansand. Gulldén ended her career with three seasons in Lugi.

In the blue and yellow jersey, she scored 846 goals in 224 A-national team matches – and, among other things, won European Championship silver and bronze, and a total of 15 international championships before Gulldén ended her national team career in December 2020.

Clubs in her career: Sävehof until spring 2011, Viborg 2011–2015, CSM Bucharest 2015–2018, Brest Bretagne 2018–2021, Vipers Kristiansand 2021–2022, Lugi 2022–2025.

Position: Centre back.

A-national team matches/goals: 224/846. Stopped playing for the national team after the European Championship in December 2020.

Championships: Has played 15 international senior championships (World Championship, European Championship, and Olympic Games). Made her Olympic debut in 2008.

Top achievements: European Championship silver in 2010, European Championship bronze in 2014, World Championship fourth place in 2017. Champions League winner with Bucharest in 2016 and with Vipers Kristiansand in 2022, multiple league titles in Sweden, Denmark, Romania, and France.
