The organizer of next year's six World Cup matches in Seattle designated one of them as a pride match. The chairman of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, opposes this. "We are determined to prevent this, and we will do it," he said in an interview with the newspaper Hammihan, according to NTB.

The match will be played on June 26, the day that marks the start of the annual Pridefest event in Seattle, USA. The local organizer therefore decided last summer that the match would be accompanied by a Pride event.

Then the draw was made that the match would be played between Egypt and Iran, two countries where homosexuality is practically forbidden.

Egypt has previously sent a letter of protest to FIFA (International Football Association Board).

“It is in direct contradiction to the cultural, religious and social values of the region,” they wrote.

Now voices from Iran have also been raised.

"We have no interest whatsoever in our third World Cup match being played under the colors of the rainbow," says Mehdi Taj.

In Iran, homosexuality can lead to the death penalty.
