The “unknown projectile” caused damage to the ship’s bridge but no injuries, according to a statement from the UK Maritime Traffic Office (UKMTO). The incident is not reported to have caused any environmentally hazardous emissions.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned ships earlier Thursday against sailing through the Strait of Hormuz without permission. Ships that do not comply "will be subject to measures," the Guards said in a statement.
The warning can be seen as a response to a message from Oman, which on Thursday night established a temporary corridor on its side of the strait.
The IMO recently announced that it would launch an operation to assist ships stranded in the waters around the Strait of Hormuz. The decision came after the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to end the war. But that work is now temporarily suspended.
"I have decided to temporarily pause the implementation of the evacuation plan to ensure that the necessary safety guarantees remain in place," IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said in a statement.
Traffic through the strait has come under Iranian control since the outbreak of war at the end of February.
