The Iranian response was sent "in a suitable manner through Oman" on Wednesday, according to the state news agency Irna, citing the country's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
No details have been disclosed about the Iranian response or the contents of Trump's letter. In connection with Trump's letter, the US also stepped up its "maximum pressure" policy against Iran, which Trump introduced during his first term, by announcing new sanctions against Iran and threatening military action.
Iran's Foreign Minister reiterated that indirect talks, which have taken place under previous administrations, can continue. However, no direct talks under "maximum pressure and military threats".
Trump withdrew unilaterally from an agreement with Tehran in 2015 during his first term as president. The agreement involved exchanging sanction relief for limitations on Iran's nuclear program.
Since then, several alarms have been raised that Iran is on its way to producing nuclear weapons – something the regime in Tehran denies.
