The damage is expected to include museums, historical buildings and other cultural sites such as the Golestan Palace in Tehran - also called the “Versailles of Iran” - and the Saadabad Palace, which is one of the capital's most visited attractions.
Iran, whose history spans several millennia, possesses a significant cultural heritage that has largely been spared from mass tourism. According to the UN, at least four of the country's 29 World Heritage sites have been damaged during the ongoing war.
