Companies that have applied for permits to build new reactors should receive compensation for previous operating expenses as well as future costs incurred when the plant is decommissioned, the Nuclear Compensation Inquiry proposes.
"As an owner of a nuclear power plant, you should not have to worry that politics will pull the rug out from under your operations. The right to compensation can increase security for owners and lead to more investment," says Minister for Energy and Enterprise Ebba Busch in a press release.
For companies that are further along in the process, additional compensation is proposed. If the facility has been put into trial operation, but not yet into regular operation, the company is also entitled to compensation for an estimated future return based on routine operation for 20 years.
