For Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who won with 3:38.79, it was his second World Championship gold in as many days. On Saturday, he also won the double distance.
Behind him, there was a long sprint for the other medals, and Samuel Pihlström was one of the aspirants. But the 24-year-old had to give up on the final lap and finished fifth with 3:39.67, half a second behind American Luke Houser, who took bronze. Briton Neil Gourley (3:39.07) took silver.
I was clear that I wanted to go for a medal. It was not far away, but I made a few mistakes along the way. But fifth is still okay, says Pihlström to TV4 Play.
At the indoor European Championship two weeks ago, Pihlström finished sixth on the same distance.
After this indoor season, I've got a real boost in self-confidence. I know I can be up there and fight for it. It's not far from being among the absolute world top.
In the shot put final, Wictor Petersson, who took silver at the indoor European Championship two weeks ago, was long in fourth place after a throw of 20.73. Despite increasing to 20.87, there was no improvement in the results list.
Petersson finished sixth in the end. The gold went to New Zealander Tom Walsh with 21.65.
