The monthly measurement – which is answered by a panel of 1,300 representatively selected households that are replaced over time – shows that the escalation of the trade conflict between the USA and the rest of the world increased anxiety about the future.

As many as 44 percent of the respondents believe that unemployment in the country will be higher than today in a year's time. This is an increase of 4.6 percentage points compared to February and the highest figure since April 2020, from the beginning of the pandemic.

The proportion of households that believe they will be worse off financially in a year's time amounted to 30 percent. This was the highest recorded level since October 2023.

It has been just as long since inflation anxiety was this high. The median response to the question of what inflation will be in a year was 3.6 percent.

The New York central bank is one of twelve regional banks that all form part of the USA's Federal Reserve.
