The South American football association Conmebol fines Independiente with a fine equivalent to about 2.4 million kronor. The team will also have to play their next seven home matches in front of empty stands, and the next seven away matches without their own fans.
Universidad de Chile is also punished. Like Independiente, they face 14 matches without their own fans and even heavier fines equivalent to about 2.7 million kronor.
However, they are allowed to continue playing in the cup, where they will meet Peruvian Alianza Lima in the quarterfinals.
The clashes between the two teams' fans in the return match of the round of 16 in Buenos Aires resulted in at least 19 injured, three of them seriously, and over 100 arrested.
Stones, chairs, and bottles flew between the supporters in the brawl. There are also reports of people being stabbed.
Conmebol's decision to punish Independiente, despite reports suggesting that the away fans started the brawl, is in line with the association's policy of holding the home team responsible for violence in the stands, writes Argentine La Nación.
To avoid similar incidents in the future, Argentina's authority for the prevention of violence in sports has banned visiting spectators from Universidad de Chile's away matches in the province of Buenos Aires until December 31, 2027.
