The local elections are usually not as politically charged as now. But after months of protests against the ruling Georgian Dream, the imprisoned Georgian ex-president Micheil Saakasjvili has urged protests in what he calls a "last chance" to save democracy in the country.
"Let's go out on the streets on October 4 and stand firm to the end. Freedom - now or never", writes Saakasjvili in social media.
Prime Minister Irakli Kobachidze calls the announced protests "radicalism".
Their attempt at revolution will definitely fail, he says.
Georgian Dream has in recent years been accused of increasingly acting as a puppet to Russia. The party has, among other things, frozen the negotiations on accession to the EU and recently talked about completely banning the political opposition.
